1. Use a fabric printer to print your designs on fabric and sew them yourself. There are several companies that provide fabric printing. The big companies have inconsistent reviews. I recommend doing a search for your town, or a bigger city near you, or your state + fabric printing. Try related words like textile printing. I did this, and I found a sweet small business with even more affordable rates than the big guys. The shipping costs a little more, but, as I’m local, I’m going to pick up my order.
2. Learn to silkscreen or a carve block prints plate to hand stamp. You can print your designs yourself onto fabric, which you can purchase as pre sewn kitchen towels for a reasonable rate. Sure, there is a learning curve, but, this is the way to keep most of the profit. Even if you purchase pre sewn towels, you’re looking at only a few dollars per towel, including shipping!
3. Use a fabric printer that specializes in printing on pre sewn kitchen towels, usually flour sack towels. Sounds perfect, right? The only problem is that most places require a minimum order of 25, which is quite an investment for us little guys.

These options are often drop shippers, which will ship your towel to a customer (if you’re a designer). Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, the quality really depends on the business, but as usual, it’s the smaller ones that consistently have positive reviews. The larger businesses use a variety of contracted printers throughout the country, or the world, so you never know what you’re going to get. Using a super cheap or drop ship company can be worthwhile if you read their reviews or aren’t picky about quality. This seems to be one of very few options for those who purchased a seamless pattern that they want to cover an entire kitchen towel (called edge to edge printing), and not just the center. If you go this route as a designer, you won’t have the option to offer your towels wholesale to boutiques.
5. Sometimes, printers who print individual tea towels are small businesses who kindly offer the option to individuals who want to print their own towels for commemorative reasons. The options I’ve found only offer printing on the front center of the towel, and not edge to edge printing. The quality is good, but the printing cost is only worthwhile for individuals who want a special keepsake. It’s an excellent deal, just a little more than the cost of buying a nice new tea towel at the shops, which makes sense as it’s such a limited run.
